Switched by Amanda Hocking
Yep you guessed it – I bought this book because 1) the cover illustrations are eye-catching; 2) It is after all on promotion (Yeah yeah… I’m a cheapo); 3) there’s a little sticker there that says multimillion copy international bestseller.
Every books seem to have the ‘international bestseller’ plastered on them nowadays. What makes this series different is that Amanda Hocking, at the relatively young age of28 currently, self published them and is selling 9,000 copies of these books on a daily basis. Quite a remarkable achievement, all else considered.
Like all good fantasy books that can be commercialized, the Trylle Trilogy is hitting the big screen this year! According to Amanda’s blog the first book/movie “Switched” is out already, but I can’t seem to find any reference on when it’ll hit Malaysia shore. I’ll keep you posted when I find out.
“Switched” is about a young female Troll (or Trylle), Wendy Everly, that was swapped at birth to a rich human family so that she can inherit the monies when she is of age. Of the human babies that unfortunately got swapped, they were stripped of their chance to live a prestigious and handsome life to live in the tucked away Trylle world and could never aspire to be anything at that world.
Now, Wendy is exceptionally pretty, has mind-numbing skills (literally) and is heir to the Throne, aka she is a princess. And then there’s the dark, handsome and enigmatic Finn Homes and n my opinion the better looking, better heart, and better manners Loki which predictably comes from the evil Trylle clan called Vittra. (The character of this Loki has nothing to do with demi-god Thor’s adopted brother Loki!)
Put your hands up if you suddenly groaned “OMG not another the glittering vampire?!”
The story plot is simple - princess and non-royal blood fella fell in love; princess is wanted by opposing clan; princess does not play nice with her Queen mother; princess is loved by everyone; princess learns new things and new rules and new manners in new place; princess finds out that she needs to protect the ‘kingdom’… Yadayadayada. Yawn. Boring. Nothing fanciful here.
So you know I do not take to this book very well, fancy cover or not. However, Switched does have one redeeming quality – its second book “Torn“. Really, the plot thickens in the second book and you will find the boredom of reading the first book worthwhile. Torn’s review coming up soon!
